Guidelines for whale watching
In order to protect the marine mammals the activity of whale watching has been regulated in many countries. While no policy exists in New Caledonia, the observance of the following guidelines will help to avoid

  • Approach from three-quarters behind, never directly in front or behind. Don’t cut across their path.
  • Avoid approaching whales closer than 50 m; if they are interested they will approach you.
  • Don’t move your boat into the middle of a group of whales; stay off to the side.
  • Avoid following whales accompanied by a calf.
  • Don’t put your boat between a mother and her calf.
  • When a whale approaches your boat, put the motor in neutral.
  • Avoid rapid changes in speed and direction.
  • If other boats are present, avoid surrounding the whales.
  • Tail slapping is a sign of aggression; move away.
  • Never forget that a whale can weigh up to 40 tonnes, more than the combined weight of four elephants!
  • Let the whale choose whether to leave or to approach.
